It is the anhydride of phthalic acid and is a significant chemical for the vast production of plastics. At first, it was produced by naphthalene’s oxidation in the presence of mercury sulphate and concentrated sulphuric acid. As it is available easily and is bifunctional which means it is an adaptable medium in organic chemistry. It is a member of 2-benzofurans and functions as an allergen. When at room temperature, it composes white crystals like flakes. And it is a clear liquid without turbidity and sediment when it is in the molten form.
